Nomu

Wa Huku

Village

Completed: 12 June 2024

People impacted: 4,000

It has a population of 4,000 people and was facing a critical water crisis.

The Nomu Wa Huku Village is located remotely in Ehlanzeni, South Africa.

The Challenge

Women and young girls endured multiple long-distance walks each day to fetch water from a dam or open source. The journey posed immediate risks to the women, who risked being attacked by wild animals or criminals. This water served as the community’s primary source for drinking, cleaning, and cooking. Consequently, waterborne illnesses, including diarrhoea, were frequent and affected both children and adults. This made it much harder for people to find employment.

Water Delivered

On the 12th of June 2024, Relate Water opened 14 taps in the Nomu Wa Huku village. Our implementation partner, Innovation: Africa, South Africa installed solar-powered water pumps. 4,000 people now have access to safe, readily available water and all its transformative ripple effects to the entire community. We hope the videos and images of the opening ceremony in this village will bring you as much joy as it brought us .
